What is Egg Donation?

Egg donation is a widely used process in donor surrogacy in which you donate your egg to help a potential mother conceive. As part of assisted reproduction, it safely helps a woman who cannot rely on her own eggs for reasons such as advanced age and ovarian failure.

Egg Donor requirements

To become an egg donor, you must:

  • Between 19 and 29 years old
  • Have a BMI 29 and under
  • Have regular monthly periods
  • Non smoker or drug user
  • Healthy genetic family history
  • Free of STDs
  • Ability to travel for 10-14 days, travel expenses will be provided

Will it Cost Me Anything to Donate?

No. You are covered for any expenses related to your donation. These typically include medical and psychological screening, medications, insurance, and any legal fees because you are entering into a legal agreement with the intended parents. Also covered are all your travel expenses to the In Vitro Fertilization clinic where your eggs are extracted. These can include airfare, ground travel and parking, meals, and lodging.

You may also choose someone who makes you feel safe and comfortable to accompany you through the process. Travel expenses for your companion, who will share a hotel room with you if needed, are covered.

What are the Benefits for being an Egg Donor?

The time, effort, and inconvenience you undergo to donate your gift will be fairly compensated. Pay varies depending on your location and donation history but usually begins at $8,000. Particular ethnicities such as Asians and East Indians may receive higher amounts because they are in high demand.

 

How Does Egg Donation Happen?

You’ll begin by taking medicines to prevent your normal menstrual cycle. You then proceed with fertility drugs that will help you produce multiple eggs at the same time. You will be administrating the medication by yourself through injection. Throughout this part of the process, you will undergo regular blood testing and ultrasound exams to monitor your health.
You then receive a final injection to prepare for egg retrieval. The doctor then inserts an ultrasound probe into your vagina and a needle to extract the egg from each follicle. You may receive sedatives, pain killers, or an anesthetic during this procedure. This procedure usually lasts for half an hour and is considered a minor medical practice so you may leave the clinic the same day upon completion.
You may need to rest and recuperate for several days after. If you need to consult with a counselor or psychotherapist afterward, we will cover those expenses.

Are There Risks?

Although egg donation is perfectly safe, as with any medical procedure, there are some risks. The medications may have side effects such as headaches, fatigue, or hot flashes. The process may be uncomfortable or painful, such as during blood drawing for testing or during retrieval. If you have unprotected sex during before and after extraction, you may become pregnant due to the fertility drugs. If you experience severe conditions such as infection or bleeding during retrieval, you may need to undergo surgery for treatment.
